The code assistant is becoming a colleague

The new coding tools do more than suggest the next line. They can plan a change, edit several files, run tests, diagnose a failure, and return with a patch ready for review.

That is a meaningful change in the shape of software work. An engineer is no longer only deciding what code to write; they are deciding what an agent may touch, which tools it may call, and how its work earns the right to merge.

Throughput is not the same as trust

McKinsey now treats agentic software development as a distinct technology trend, while JetBrains reports that AI coding agents are already routine for many professional developers. The durable advantage will come from bounded execution, visible tests, provenance, and human review—not from letting an agent move fastest.

The best coding agent is not the one that changes the most files. It is the one whose changes remain understandable.

The teammate era is arriving, but the merge gate still belongs to the team.
